POLYGLOT BIBLE
Today it is very difficult to understand the value that 16th and 17th century society gave to Theology. The fact is that the Holy Scriptures were considered to be the book of truth and therefore comprised the knowledge of the period.

At Alcala, the bible was studied in an innovative way that could be termed scientific. They returned to the sources, comparing texts of the different Biblical versions (Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic), consolidating these studies in the great book of Spanish humanism, the Biblia Políglota Complutenseor Complutensian Polyglot Bible.

The text was prepared at the University of Alcalá, thanks to the patronage of cardinal Cisneros. Work commenced in 1502 and the printing was concluded in 1517, the year in which the cardinal died; however, it was not published until 1720, when Leon X authorised its dissemination.

The Polyglot Bible is a monument of Renaissance culture; a copy of the bible is kept at the city’s Town Hall.
